Black To Move - What Would You Do In This Position? Why? Indicate Concrete Move |
Stop Right There!
ANSWER
In such positions, it's a good idea to exert extra pressure at the e4 pawn - it's not supported by a fellow pawn (f2-f3 would leave dark squared weaknesses around the castled king position), Black has a half open e file, and Rook is ready to take advantage of the said file.
How exactly should you start exerting pressure? The answer is 1...h6. This move has the idea of 2...Bf8 the next move - bringing the rook into action with good chances for both sides.
HOWEVER, if you picked 1...Nd7 (which sets the rook's sight on the e4 pawn right away), then prepare for a rude awakening! 1...Nd7 is the move played in the game, and guess what - that allowed White to win in a flash with 2.Bxf7+! Kxf7 3.Ne6!! and the Black queen has nowhere to go. The Knight is immune as 3…Kxe6 4.Qd5+ Kf6 5.Qf5 checkmate!
